{"id":284,"date":"2015-05-11T05:42:03","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T12:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=284"},"modified":"2015-06-03T09:52:01","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T16:52:01","slug":"may-11-happy-birthday-to-franciscus-sylvius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=284","title":{"rendered":"May 11: Happy Birthday to Franciscus Sylvius"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, May 11, is the\u00a0 birthday of <b>Franciscus Sylvius<\/b>, a Dutch physician and the inventor of Gin.<\/p>\n<p>At least by some accounts.\u00a0\u00a0 He is often credited as the inventor of Gin in the mid 1600s.\u00a0\u00a0 However, this is open to some debate.\u00a0 Jenever is reference in Philip Massinger&#8217;s play &#8220;The Duke of Milan&#8221;, 1623.\u00a0 Jenever is Dutch for Juniper so it appears that Genever would be a juniper flavored drink,\u00a0<span class=\"st\">\u00e0 <em>la<\/em><\/span> Gin.\u00a0 Additionally, in 1606 the Dutch had already levied taxes on Jenever and similar liquors.<\/p>\n<p>So who invented Gin?\u00a0 Does it really matter?\u00a0 Whether it was Mr. Sylvius\u00a0 or not, someone did and we should all be thankful.\u00a0\u00a0 And May 11 seems as good a day as any to celebrate the birth of Gin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, May 11, is the\u00a0 birthday of Franciscus Sylvius, a Dutch physician and the inventor of Gin.
