{"id":577,"date":"2015-07-02T14:07:09","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T21:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=577"},"modified":"2015-07-02T14:10:13","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T21:10:13","slug":"shaken-vs-stirred-revisited-bruising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=577","title":{"rendered":"Shaken vs. Stirred Revisited: Bruising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is my third \u201cRevisited\u201d post on \u2018Shaken vs. Stirred\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 The previous two dealt with Temperature and Dilution.\u00a0 See <a title=\"Shaken vs. Stirred Revisited: Temperature\" href=\"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=551\">Shaken vs. Stirred Revisited: Temperature<\/a> and <a title=\"Shaken vs. Stirred Revisited: Dilution\" href=\"http:\/\/shakennotstirred.us\/?p=574\">Shaken vs. Stirred Revisited: Dilution<\/a> to catch up.\u00a0\u00a0 Today we wax poetic on Bruising.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve read or heard somewhere that shaking &#8216;bruises&#8217; the gin and\/or Martini.\u00a0 And by implication, this is &#8216;BAD&#8217; and you don&#8217;t want your Gin to be bruised.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What exactly does Bruising mean?<\/p>\n<p>It does not mean that you&#8217;re turning the martini &#8216;black and blue&#8217;!\u00a0\u00a0 Nor does it mean that the Gin is ruined.\u00a0 Nor does it imply that the taste is altered, more on that later.<\/p>\n<p>In our discussion here it means that you emulsify the drink making it cloudy, or if you will, foamy.\u00a0 Shaking the Martini adds millions and millions of tiny air bubbles into the mix.\u00a0 Ok, maybe not millions, but a lot.\u00a0\u00a0 Enough that all those little bubbles creates the cloudiness in the drink. These tiny air bubbles also make the liquid just a bit less dense. You <em>can<\/em> feel the difference on your palate &#8211; this is sometimes also called &#8216;Mouth Feel&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>This affect it temporary as the air bubbles eventually work their way to the surface of the liquid and &#8216;pop&#8217;.\u00a0 This takes approximately 30 &#8211; 45 seconds, though I haven&#8217;t actually sat there with a stop watch.\u00a0 Really, who has time to time this when there&#8217;s a martini sitting in front of you inviting you to take a sip.\u00a0 But I digress&#8230;.\u00a0 the point being that after about a minute the effect is gone and you&#8217;re left with a clear smooth martini.<\/p>\n<p>Next up, Taste &#8230;. Which tastes better?\u00a0 Shaken or Stirred?\u00a0 Keep your eyes open for the next installment&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Advantage?<br \/>\nI&#8217;d call this a draw. This is ultimately a matter of personal preference. I like the emulsification, but not so adamantly that I ask my drink to be shaken.
